The School of Information Resource Management (SIRM) is an institution specialized in teaching and scientific research of Information Resource Management discipline of Renmin University of China. Among the institutions of its kind in China, it is famous for its long research history, competitive teaching and strong research faculties, and leading national influence along with its high reputation across the world. It is also one of the most important centers in China for teaching, scientific research and personnel training of Information Management, Information System, Knowledge Management, Library, Information and Archives Management. The school is a member institution of the global iSchools Constorium and an Academic Center of UNESCO World Memory Project: Memory of World Knowledge Center-Beijing.
The discipline, Library, Information and Archives Management, in the School of Information Resource Management consists of five second-tier disciplines: Library, Information, and Archives Management, Information Resource Management and Information Analysis. In 1952, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China authorized Renmin University of China to establish the higher education of Archival Studies in China. The specialized education of Archival Studies, including special archival diploma education, undergraduate education and postgraduate education including both master and PhD programs. It is the only national key subdiscipline in the field of Archival Studies in China. The construction of Information Studies discipline began in the early 1980s, focusing on Social Science Information Research. Influenced by the method of Chinese Library Classification, systematic Library Studies education began in the 1990s and focused on the formation of Higher Education of Library Studies, the construction of the First-tier Digital Library of Social Science Information Management, etc. In 2005, the school was authorized to confer a doctor’s degree in Library, Information and Archives Management. In 2012, Library, Information and Archives Management discipline was recognized as a key discipline by the People’s government of Beijing Municipality. Based on the needs of economic and social development and the trend of the discipline’s innovational development, the school further set up the PhD program and the master program of second-tier discipline, the Information Resource Management, in 2009, the PhD program and the master program of the second-tier disciplines, Information Analysis, in 2012, and the undergraduate program of Information Resource Management in 2013. In 2017, Library, Information and Archives Management was listed in the world-class universities and first-class discipline construction list.
The School of Information Resource Management (SIRM) has established a comprehensive higher professional education system in Information Resource Management. The school has been authorized to confer a PhD degree in the discipline of Library, Information and Archives Management. The SIRM has all the second-tier disciplines of the first-tier discipline (Library, Information and Archives Management), among which the second-tier discipline, the Archival Studies is a national key discipline and the Information Studies is a key discipline of Beijing Municipality. There are four undergraduate majors: Archival Studies, Information Management and Information System (specialization in Government Information Management), Information Management and Information System, and Information Resource Management. There are eight master programs: Archival Studies, Information Studies, Library Studies, Information Resource Management, Chinese and Foreign Political System, Archival Preservation, and Library Information Studies, Information Analysis; There are five PhD programs: Archival Studies, Information Studies, Library Studies, Information Resource Management, and Information Analysis, and there is also a Postdoctoral Station at the first-tier discipline, the Library Information and Archives Management. The School has 39 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 15 professors, 18 associate professors and 4 lecturers, i.e., about 90% of teachers have senior positions, and there are 16 PhD supervisors and 37 master’s supervisors.
In 2017, A list of world-class universities and first-class disciplines was jointly released by the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Renmin University of China was selected in the list of world-class universities and first-class discipline construction plan, and Library, Information and Archives Management Discipline of the SIRM was selected in the list of the first-class discipline construction plan.
The SIRM holds the educational belief of “complementary benefits from both humanities and social science and natural science, developing ways of thinking to be intellectuals, enhancing code of ethics and professional development, focus on both pragmatics and innovation”. The SIRM is trying hard to take endless efforts with scientific attitude and innovation spirit to make full use of niversity multidisciplinary interactive platforms to keep its top national leading roles in archival studies. It is actively developing relevant disciplines and constantly improving the teaching and research level of information resource management and relevant disciplines as a whole in its particular ways, it is expected to make greater contributions to the development of Renmin University into one of the world’s leading universities specializing in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
